Common lilac
Syringa vulgaris – A classic spring flowering shrub
Syringa vulgaris, commonly known as the common lilac, is a true classic in the spring garden. As the first warm days arrive, the plant produces large, fragrant flower clusters that fill the garden with a sweet and nostalgic scent. The flowers appear in shades of white, pink and deep purple and are very attractive to bees and butterflies.
Originally native to southeastern Europe, the lilac has been cultivated in European gardens for centuries. It was often planted in monastery and country gardens because of its reliable flowering and wonderful fragrance.
Syringa vulgaris grows into a strong shrub or small tree and is very winter hardy. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages good flowering the following year.
